PART 7

STEP AWAY

FROM THE

DOOR TO

SEE WHAT IS

POSSIBLE

CHAPTER 30

THE INFINITE

POSSIBILITY

OF MAYBE

One day, I was watching the movie Madagascar with my children. There is a scene in the movie when a lion gets thrown out of the forest and the other animals shut a door in his face. The lion starts to go crazy; all he wants to do is get back into the forest, and he bangs and bangs on the door screaming, “Let me in! Let me in!” As my kids and I were watching the lion in total despair banging on the door, we started to laugh. Why? There was nothing to either side of the door. At any point in time, the lion could have moved to the left or the right or even on top or below the door and entered the forest, but he just kept banging. He could not see beyond the door right in front of his face. In his mind, that was the only way back into the jungle. Based on his past experience, he believed that because it was the portal through which he’d been thrown out of the jungle, that it was the only way he could get back in.

After watching that part of the movie, I understood why some of my clients, who loved the idea of Maybe, could not move past their linear thoughts. Some of my clients were standing too close to the proverbial door of their businesses, their careers, or their lives. Sometimes the door was open and sometimes it was closed, but either way, they could not see beyond the door because they were standing so close to it. The door was blocking their view to any possible future other than that linear path to their desired outcome. Just like the lion from Madagascar, they failed to see that these doors had absolutely nothing around them but pure open space. There was nothing above, below, or to the sides of these doors. But these clients of mine could not realize this because they had not taken their focus off the door. Around the door is infinite space and infinite opportunity.

When I began to introduce the idea of the door to my clients, many started to visualize a place beyond it.

When clients step back from the door, they realize that their path doesn’t have to take them through the door—they can go around it and still get to their objective. When they step back from the door, they start to see that just Maybe there is the possibility that there are other ways to proceed. I refer to this vast space around the door as the infinite possibility of Maybe.
